The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers scholarships to international students who wish to study at Japanese universities as Research Students, Japanese Studies Students, Teacher Training Students, and undergraduate students upon passing the screening process. The scholarship students are recruited and selected in two ways: embassy recommendation or university recommendation.

1.Embassy recommendation
Applicants need to apply through the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in the applicant’s county at first. For more details, applicants should be advised to check websites of MEXT and the Japanese Embassy in their home country.
◆Research Student
If selected, the student first enrolls as a research student and receives preparatory education in the Japanese language and research activities for sixmonths to one and a half years.
During this period, the student will take the entrance examination for the legitimate program, then enter the Master’s or Doctoral course.

◆Japanese Studies Student
If selected, the student first enrolls as a research student and receives preparatory education in the Japanese language and research activities for six months to one and a half years.
During this period, the student will take the entrance examination for the legitimate program, then enter the Master’s or Doctoral course.

◆Teacher Training Student
◆Undergraduate student
Each student will be enrolled at a preparatory school designated by MEXT for a one-year intensive course in the Japanese language and other subjects necessary for preparation for proceeding to university. A grantee who has completed the preparatory education will go on to a university designated by MEXT upon passing its entrance examination.
2.University Recommendation
In this category, candidates are nominated to MEXT through Utsunomiya University selection.

Students who enroll in the undergraduate program in the foreign partner universities and study in the fields of Japanese Language and Culture are eligible. Applicants need recommendation from their home university. The students will go back to their home university to continue their study after completing the 11 months program.
Utsunomiya University accepts Japanese Studies Students at the Center for International Exchange from October to August.
