《For Current Students: Information about Extension of Preiod of Stay》

If you need to extend your period of stay, submit a completed application form (Word) with copies of your residence card (both sides) and your student ID card to the Office of International Exchange.

Prepare for other required materials by yourself, referring to the “List of Materials submitted to the Immigration Office for Application for Extension of Period of Stay“(PDF.)

If you exceed the period of stay for even one day, you are illegally staying in Japan. Do the necessary procedures well in advance. The immigration office accepts applications three months before the expiration date of the period of stay.

It takes two or three business days from your application for Utsunomiya University to issue your application for extension of period of stay (to be completed by the host institution.)

If you move to a new place, report the change of address at the city office within 14 days and submit a copy of your residence card (both sides) with your new address to the Office of International Exchange.

《Part-time Jobs》

If your status of residence is “student,” you have to obtain a “Permission to engage in activities other than permitted under the status of residence” (conditional part-time job permission)  before working. If you wish to work part-time, apply for conditional part time job permission at the arrival airport or immigration office in Japan.

You may work part-time up to 28 hours per week.

If you take a leave of absence from the university, you can’t work part-time in Japan until you return to the university.

《Leave of Absence from Utsunomiya University》

Those who don’t do any activities that are the basis for their residence status over a period of more than three months without any legitimate reasons will be subject to revocation of their status of residence, following Japanese law. If you take a leave of absence, return to your home country, or change your status of residence from “student” to another appropriate one.

Financial problem is NOT a legitimate reason to stay in japan during the leave of absence with a status of residence “student.”

《If you temporarily leave Japan during your study period and plan to re-enter Japan to continue study》

If you leave Japan for more than one year, you have to obtain a “re-entry permit” in advance. But if your stay outside Japan is within one year, you are eligible for a “special re-entry permit” and you don’t have to obtain the regular “re-entry permit.”

In case your period of stay expires during your temporary leave from Japan, you must obtain a student visa again.

About the overseas travel

※If your study period at Utsunomiya University finishes during your remporary leave and you don’t enter another university or language school in Japan soon,  your residence status “student” will be invalid, even if it seems that your period of stay hasn’t expired. In that case, don’t re-enter Japan with your current status of residence. Obtain a new appropriate visa.

《After Graduation from Utsunomiya University》

Your status of residence “student” is valid during your enrollment in an academic institution in Japan. If you don’t enter another university or language school in Japan after your study period at Utsunomiya University finishes, you can’t stay in Japan with your current residence status “student.” Even if it seems that your period of stay hasn’t expired,  you have to change your status of residence, or return to your home country, immediately.

If you continue to stay in Japan under the status of residence “student” without going to any academic institution in Japan, you will be subject to revocation of your staus of residence.  In addition, if you are considered as an especially malicious offender, your status of residence will be revoked and you will be deported immediately. Do an appropriate procedure for the residence of status after finishing your study period at Utsunomiya University.
